As we entered the year 2020, #WorldWar3 was trending on Twitter. Although this particular threat of global conflict has seemingly been forgotten it prompts the question of how we as a nation remember war? It is, for this reason, Jack has chosen to design The Silver Tassie; an opera by Mark Anthony Turnage based on the play of the same name by Sean O’Casey. Although often overlooked, the text is famous for the portrayal of Ireland’s relationship to World War 1 through symbolism and realism. Jack formed his concept with the recurring themes of memory and legacy in mind to create a dynamic tomb-like structure. Constructed from metal to elicit a monumental effect, the structure shifts with each act to mirror Harry Heegan’s deterioration, from sports hero to disabled veteran.
