In my degree piece I worked with and fabricated various scientific apparatus to explore the border between visible and invisible.
I use installation to physicalise concepts that are based around new media and scientific technologies. Adding poetics to scientific practices and processes, the work is imbued with a new element of interactability. This process unlocks the many cultural, social, and spiritual dimensions that these tools, practices and experiments hold.
An example of these elements in my process is a Schlieren imaging machine that I have created. Schlieren imaging is commonly used in aerodynamics. It can show hidden air currents on a television monitor that are usually invisible to the naked eye. I have constructed this imaging system to show the breath and heat that is produced and shared between two people.
There is already a plethora of art, music and culture based on the world as we can perceive it now, but imagine how much more content we would have if everyone could see the world as a bee sees it. Thoughts like this drive me in my practice to make instances where the invisible flickers to the visible.
